If You Are on the Right Path, It Will Always Be Uphill

When I accepted my offer to join DoorDash in 2016, several things didn’t make sense.

The cash comp was lower, the benefits weren’t as strong, and the commute was longer. A lot longer. But I had received a strong confirmation that joining DoorDash was the right move. I knew I had to accept.

A few weeks in, I was riding the Caltrain home on a Friday night, exhausted from a long week. I saw that my friend had posted this Inc. article.

The author shared a brutal stat—if one spouse commuted longer than 45 minutes, that couple was 40% more likely to get divorced. Well… my commute was almost double that. 😬

Riding the train home that night, I had already been fighting doubts about my decision. The job was hard. I felt like I was in over my head. And now I was being told my marriage was at risk.

I paused, took a few deep breaths, and closed my eyes. I went back to the moment I was given the offer. I reflected on what I’d experienced. I reminded myself of the strong confirmation I had just weeks earlier.

When I got home that night, I shared the article with my wife. We discussed how we were going to show up for each other. We were aligned that taking this job was the right thing. We were committed.

We didn’t get divorced. Our marriage grew stronger. That job continued to be challenging but brought unforeseen blessings and opportunities.

In the words of Henry Eyring, “If you are on the right path, it will always be uphill.”

Stay the course. Keep going.
